As volunteers, employees, employers, educators, mentors, advocates, and\nmore, they offer insight and experience that benefit the entire community. That\u2019s\nwhy Older Americans Month (OAM)\nhas been recognizing the contributions of this growing population for 56 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/acl.gov\/\">Administration\nfor Community Living<\/a>\n(ACL) each May, OAM provides resources to help older Americans stay healthy and\nindependent, and resources to help communities support and celebrate their\ndiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nyear\u2019s OAM theme, <em>Connect, Create,\nContribute<\/em>, encourages older adults and their communities to: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Connect <\/strong>with friends, family,\nand local services and resources.<\/li><li><strong>Create<\/strong> through activities\nthat promote learning, health, and personal enrichment. <\/li><li><strong>Contribute<\/strong> time,\ntalent, and life experience to benefit others. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Along\nwith regions all around the nation, NARC will celebrate OAM by promoting ways that\ncommunity members of <em>all<\/em> ages can take part in helping the country\nthrive. Below are three great examples from our membership regarding how their current\nwork highlights this year\u2019s OAM theme:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Connect<\/strong>: The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging (AAA) publishes\nan annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ppacg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Yellowbook-Text-2019-2-1.pdf\">Senior\nInformation and Assistance Directory<\/a>, a resource guide connecting seniors and caregivers\nto many services of interest available throughout the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Create<\/strong>: The Rogue Valley Council of\nGovernments Senior and Disability Services department <a href=\"http:\/\/sohealthyoregon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Provider_Information-Sheet2pgDEC.rev_2015-1.pdf\">holds six-week Living Well workshops<\/a>, helping seniors build self-management\nskills to better deal with diabetes and chronic pain and conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contribute<\/strong>: The Atlanta Regional Commission Aging\nand Independence Services Group (the metro region\u2019s AAA) provides senior\nvolunteer opportunities through its empowerline program. Through a variety of\nactivities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empowerline.org\/volunteer\/senior-volunteer-opportunities\/\">senior volunteers share<\/a> important health, wellness, and\npreventative services information with the peers in their region that seek\nassistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Join\nNARC this month in recognizing the important role seniors play in our\ncommunities, as well as programming that is happening across our regions to\nengage and support older Americans.
