In the wake of Hurricane Harvey; however, local officials learned just how helpful these tools can be during a storm and after when it is time to rebuild. Jesse Bounds, director of innovation for the City of Houston, relayed several examples of the ways <a href=\"http:\/\/www.routefifty.com\/public-safety\/2018\/04\/houston-focus-innovation-build-back-better\/147434\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston residents used technology during and after the storm<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The local tech community of civic hackers developed ad-hoc technologies to address citizens\u2019 immediate needs;<\/li>\n<li>Volunteers used crowdsourcing tools to rescue 7,000 households;<\/li>\n<li>Houston-area public agencies used open-sourced platforms and social media websites like Nextdoor to share critical emergency communications; and<\/li>\n<li>Houston leaders are currently partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-atlas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.the-atlas.com\/\">The Atlas Marketplace<\/a> to learn how other cities are building back even better after a natural disaster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Houston, TX has always had an eye for new technology and innovation.
