They probably are not thinking\nabout the regional planning that went into creating the transportation system\nthat brought them to school. Nor the interjurisdictional trails that connect\nthe parks that they will use for soccer practice. No, they are probably more\nfocused on where their classes are at than knowing where their community\u2019s\nnatural disaster emergency evacuation routes are located. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some regional councils are trying to teach the next\ngeneration that even being as young as they are, they can significantly impact their\ncommunities. Just as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/mara_mintzer_how_kids_can_help_design_cities?language=en\">Mara\nMintzer highlighted in her TedxMileHigh talk<\/a>, children should be included\nin local planning efforts. After all, they may help regional planners find a\nblind spot in how we construct our built environment that we adults have not\nconsidered. The decisions being made today will impact their tomorrow, so it is\nimperative that they know how to be a part of the long-range planning process that\nmay influence their way of life 20, 30, or even 50 years from now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some examples of how members are educating young\nleaders about regional planning and are involving them in ongoing efforts\nacross their communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.browardmpo.org\/index.php\/news-updates\/226-preparing-the-silver-tsunami-by-mentoring-the-next-generation\">Broward\nMetropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) \u2013 Think Like a Planner Program<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broward MPO has held several \u201cThink Like a Planner\u201d\nworkshops in high schools across the region. During these workshops, teens get\nan introduction to transportation planning and potential careers in the\nindustry. After a walk around the neighborhood surrounding Broward MPO offices,\nthe students are tasked with coming up with ways to make the area safer for all\nmodes of transportation. They then turn these ideas into a proposal, presenting\nto a three-judge panel of transportation professionals and Broward MPO Board\nMembers. The organization has seen great success with the program and is looking\nforward to hosting more workshops this school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmap.illinois.gov\/updates\/all\/-\/asset_publisher\/UIMfSLnFfMB6\/content\/students-help-plan-for-chicago-region-s-future-during-tenth-future-leaders-in-planning-program\">Chicago\nMetropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) \u2013 Future Leaders in Planning Program<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For ten years, CMAP has organized Future Leaders in Planning\n(FLIP), a leadership development opportunity for high school students in Northeastern\nIllinois. Over the course of a week during the summer, the students learn about\nthe issues that are shaping the Chicago region and come up with solutions for\nsome of the challenges facing urban planners. Activities throughout the 5-day\nbootcamp include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A scavenger hunt to find bus stops,\nLEED-certified buildings, and public art; <\/li><li>Negotiating a mock community development\nproject;<\/li><li>Designing their own sample plan for the new Obama\nFoundation central plaza; and <\/li><li>Completing a final group project where they\nvisualized the goals of CMAP\u2019s ON TO 2050 plan across the different scales of\nurban planning. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atlantaregional.org\/leadership-and-engagement\/leadership-programs\/model-atlanta-regional-commission-marc\/\">Atlanta\nRegional Commission (ARC) \u2013 Model Atlanta Regional Commission<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bringing\ntogether 10<sup>th<\/sup> and 11<sup>th<\/sup> graders from the Atlanta metro\narea, ARC\u2019s Model Atlanta Regional Commission (MARC) provides experimental\nlearning opportunities in critical issue areas such as transportation,\nsustainability, and community development. Participants take part in a\nsix-month program to learn from subject-matter experts and community leaders,\nengaging in thoughtful conversations about challenges the region is facing.\nStudents are taken on field trips and visits to various community partners to\nreceive hands-on learning about the efforts of different stakeholders\nthroughout their region. They also develop leadership, communication, and collaboration\nskills by creating actionable solutions to current regional issues. After\nparticipating in MARC, <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/319602738\">students have\nexpressed<\/a> a better understanding of the considerations that go into the\ndifferent issue areas that ARC regional planners have to think about, as well\nas how their entire 10-county region is interconnected.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With new backpacks and school supplies in tow, students across the country are heading back to school.
